O’ahu, Hawai’i

The 4 week O'ahu program takes place at multiple sites across the island, with primary host partners on the North Shore in Pupukea (Waimea Valley) and on the southern windward side in Kailua (Enchanted Gardens). In addition to regular programming at our host sites, Externs will gain valuable experience working and serving alongside partners from a variety of community initiatives, municipal programs, nurseries, farms, and conservation groups. From coastal hiking beach clean-ups to invasive plant remediation at botanical gardens to learning about the day-to-day at a Hawai’ian native plant nursery, each day of this program is designed to provide real world experience and deepen participant’s understanding of ecological systems. Let’s GROW!

More info:

  • GROW Externs are awarded with accommodation and Hawai’i-based ground travel at no cost. If a potential participant can cover their own costs, we welcome contributions as a way to subsidize the room and board of other Externs.

  • Airfare and daily incidentals are the responsibility of participants (although some meals will be provided by the program and program partners.) If you have extenuating financial circumstances, please let us know in your application and we will do our best to support eligible candidates, no matter their financial situation.

  • After completion of the program, a modest honorarium is awarded to Externs, commensurate with their full participation as determined by program coordinators.

  • We have a rolling admissions cycle and applicants are reviewed on a 1st come 1st serve basis.
