Central Appalachia
GROW Externships’ newest destination is in coal country: West Virginia, Ohio, and Maryland. This program offers a wildly diverse set of experiences set against the backdrop of the region’s deciduous forests and mountainscapes. Externs will support our grassroots partners on the ground, working to restore ecological health, reclaim ecosystems, and remediate the impacts of the coal industry.
From decommissioned coal mines to indigenous-led healing spaces, our externs will engage the people working to bring resilience, imagination, and science to improve the ecology and community well-being of this place. Externs will support with community outreach around invasive species remediation through a local foraging festival, support local citizen science and entrepreneurship efforts, learn about chemical engineering as it pertains to contamination, and engage indigenous cultural practice as maintained by contemporary practitioners. Let’s GROW!
More info:
GROW Externs are awarded with accommodation and ground travel at no cost. If a potential participant can cover their own costs, we welcome contributions as a way to subsidize the room and board of other Externs.
Daily incidentals are the responsibility of participants (although some meals will be provided by the program and program partners.) If you have extenuating financial circumstances, please let us know in your application and we will do our best to support eligible candidates, no matter their financial situation.
After completion of the program, a modest honorarium is awarded to Externs, commensurate with their full participation as determined by program coordinators.
We have a rolling admissions cycle and applicants are reviewed on a 1st come 1st serve basis.
Programs like this Central Appalachia program are not possible without the support of like-minded donors. Please consider making a contribution to support underrepresented students and developing professionals, local partners leading the way on the ground, and our program’s ability to continue deepening an ecology of mutual support.
