Empowering emerging environmental scientists from underrepresented backgrounds

Grassroots sustainability projects around the world need help.

Young environmental science professionals want hands-on learning.

We’re here to bridge the gap.

GROW Externships creates life-changing paid externships for disadvantaged and underrepresented (BIPOC, woman-identifying, and LGBTQIA2S+) developing professionals, vitalizing their careers in sustainability, climate justice, environmental science, and related fields.

We host externs around the world, where we guide them in supporting local partner organizations and serving their communities while learning first-hand from practitioners making a difference in the field. Through this work, our goal is to additionally expand accessibility and pave the way for greater diversity in the scientific field.

The GROW Experience

See how our externs are growing and flourishing in this short film created with testimony and media captured from our 2021 Winter O’ahu cohort!

The next generation of scientists hone their skills. Local sustainability initiatives thrive. The planet benefits.

Sustainable projects requiring volunteer assistance are able to secure staff that is traditionally unavailable on a local level, creating a win-win scenario for everyone.

Cultural connection, fostered via service.

In communities where current job trends do not favor environmental work, rural farmers run short, and traditional local industries are threatened, GROW boosts the capacity of regions to rise to their full resilient and sustainable potential.

Cultural exchange through language cafes, interactive classes, and public greenspace enrich the experience for all involved. Local practitioners have the opportunity to trade tips around their work practices, techniques, and lived experience; enriching the global scope of understanding of both the working world and the environmental realities impacting it.

“Perhaps one of the greatest means to achieve global peace and harmony is cultural exchange. It opens up the vistas of human understanding and further expands our universal consciousness.”
